When choosing LCE for your child’s cakes smash session, you may have many questions regarding the process. How do I schedule? What’s the workflow? What do I need to bring? Do I have to bring ALL those decorations?!?
If this is you, then this blog post is here to help you out! Read on!
What is the process of booking with LCE Photography and then what happens?
The booking process is fairly straightforward. Send an email to my assistant Katie and she will work with you to get you on the schedule. I recommend lunch time or earlier in the morning for these sessions because it’s typically when babies are most happy. But you know your child best. Schedule a time that works with their nap schedule if possible!
After scheduling, you will receive your contracts and deposit invoice. I DO require a $100 deposit for all sessions on my calendar. The deposit for cake smash sessions is particularly important because it allows me to purchase props needed for your session.
You will also be sent a Questionnaire to complete. This is also important. If you do not know what theme or decorations you want for your session, that’s ok!! That’s what Katie and I are for. WE HELP YOU! Some people want a very elaborate theme for their child’s cake smash session. Some folks do not want ANY props at all. That’s ok too!! I really do love both looks!
Katie will email you and ask for inspiration. We will work together to create the perfect set for you. You do not need to bring any props (besides the cake…more on that later). Katie helps me shop, gather supplies, makes banners and props. She’s pretty much the most crafty person ever….so we have you covered.
I have no clue what kind of session I want! What is the difference?
This is another common statement. And the first question to ask yourself is “do I want some family pictures?” or…..”Do I want sibling pictures?” If the answer is yes, then the Cake Smash + Family Mini is for you.
I have added a package within the last year to allow families to be included in the cake smash session. Please note….this does not take the place of a full family mini session. This option allows parents and siblings to take a few images before the smash. Maybe you just want a few for a gallery wall. Or maybe you just really want one good sibling portrait! And MAYBE…..you want to have some fun in the end and join in on the smash.
A Cake Smash + Family session
These sessions includes family pictures, pictures of the birthday kiddo alone, and then the actual smash.
A Cake Smash + Mini session is currently our most popular session type (although the family sessions are growing in popularity).
These sessions are images of the birthday baby before the smash. I will add in props, maybe balloons if requested, and we will capture happy traditional one year old pictures.
BOTH “Cake Smash + Family Mini” and “Cake Smash + Mini” sessions are equally about 30 minutes of additional shooting time and minimum of 25 additional digital images to your cake smash session.
Cake Smash session
This is the reason for our shoot! Cake smash sessions are roughly 30 minutes long. You can choose to change outfits in-between the cake smash plus mini session and the actual smash.
Please note: I only recommend ONE outfit change for smash sessions (for a total of two outfits). Babies tend to get cranky when their clothes are changed and we don’t want to use our time together changing outfits.
What about decorations?
We have you covered. Again, some folks like a very detailed setup, and some (like above) want a more simple session. Katie will contact you and we will develop your vision together.
What about a cake?
I do recommend a professional cake, simply because they tend to photograph better. The cake IS the main prop of the session outside of your adorable baby. You want your images to stand out in a positive way.
Unfortunately, due to allergies, I do not provide the cake…however, if you are in need of local bakers, email us and we can send you a list of bakers who our clients use often.
What about an outfit?
This is your choice! Just remember, whatever you choose may not make it back in the closet! The most important thing is to try the outfit on your child before the session. This happens all the time. It’s too small, or it’s too big. Also….get those suspenders ready! They are hard to put on and adjust at the time of session. Have everything tested and ready to go before your session day.
What should I bring to the session?
Here is a quick list of what I have found is helpful to have.
The cake
The outfit
If your child is wearing a dress, please bring bloomers to cover the diaper
A sippy cup or bottle. They will be thirsty after.
Cheerios or puffs or yogurt melts. Or some small food they enjoy eating. Some kiddos need a little incentive.
A change of outfit for baby
A change of outfit for YOU! You MAY get icing on you!
Diapers
Wipes
I hope this blog post helps you prep for your session and answer any lingering questions you have!! As always, please reach out if you have any additional questions!
