Cake smash sessions are some of my favorites and I shoot them often; however, many clients have issues with coming up with inspiration and ideas for their session. The first thing I have clients do is ask themselves some questions.
Do you want to match the party theme?
Do you want to match a room where you want to display the images?
Do you want something very simple?
And then, I tell them to go to Pinterest. Create a board of what jumps out and inspires you. And share this with Katie and I.
Here are some examples to get you started.
THEMED SMASHES -
These are sessions where clients have asked for very specific themes. They may have wanted certain backdrop colors, prop colors or specific props included.
Unicorn Smash
Wild One cake smash with gold, white and black
Unicorn smash with pink backdrop and balloon banner
Super hero cake smash
Camping theme or lumberjack
NASA or outer space
Baby Shark…shades of blue and burlap

COLOR THEMED CAKE SMASH SESSIONS.
Some clients want their backdrops to be more simple. Or they want to base their smash backdrop on certain colors. See below
Pink, coral and rose gold themed cake smash
Blue and white with a Yankee theme. This is an example of a banner Katie made to add a simple touch to give the cake smash a theme.
Simple purple and grey with winter florals
Coral and Mint
Shades of blue and grey
Pink and Purple
Sprinkled themed. This is an example of when mama really wanted a certain setup, so she brought her banner and #1 prop.
NON-CAKE “CAKE” Smashes
Maybe your child doesn’t like cake, or maybe you are dealing with an allergy. These folks opted for a different type of smash.
Spaghetti!
Donuts!
Ice Cream!
Watermelon!
COMMON THEME - DIFFERENT LOOKS
Just because you choose a common theme, doesn’t mean your pictures will look the same as someone else’s. There are many ways to do a theme. Here are examples for the very popular Winter ONE-derland theme.
